On September 13th 1940, James H. “Ginger” Lacey of the 501st squadron
took off in search of a He 111 reported somewhere over London. Due to
the solid cloud layer, he knew he would be unable to land. Afte4r two
hours of searching, Lacey finally spotted the bomber slipping through the
clouds at 14,000 feet. He later discovered that this very same Heinkel
had just bombed Buckingham Palace.
